 Long COVID and Brain Health: Advances in Assessment and Outpatient Neurorehabilitation.

 Program Description:

This workshop will explore the evolving role of healthcare providers in addressing the complex psychological, neurological, and cognitive effects of Long COVID. It will provide an overview of the latest advances in the assessment of cognitive and psychological functioning post-COVID, highlighting how early detection of cognitive impairments can lead to better long-term outcomes. The session will also review the most effective evidence-based strategies in outpatient neurorehabilitation, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary care in promoting recovery.

 

Participants will gain insights into the current understanding of the neurocognitive impacts of Long COVID, the social and healthcare challenges it presents, and the latest rehabilitation techniques designed to improve brain function and quality of life for affected individuals. The presentation will conclude with a discussion on the future of neurorehabilitation in a post-COVID world and the role healthcare providers play in facilitating patient recovery and optimizing brain health.

 

Learning Objectives:  After attending this workshop, it is expected that participants will be able to:

 

  • Understand the role of healthcare providers in the assessment and management of neurocognitive impairments related to Long COVID.
  • Recognize the latest advances in outpatient neurorehabilitation and how they can be applied to improve cognition and brain health in individuals affected by Long COVID.
  • Integrate current evidence-based strategies in neurorehabilitation into interdisciplinary care approaches for promoting patient recovery.
  • Evaluate the broader impact of Long COVID and the challenges it presents in healthcare.
  • Anticipate the future role of healthcare providers in shaping neurorehabilitation practices in a post-COVID environment.

 

About the Presenter: Cheung “William” Tsang, PsyD, is a fellowship-trained clinical neuropsychologist and health psychologist at Hackensack Meridian Neuroscience Institute at Hackensack University Medical Center. He also holds an assistant professor of Neurology faculty appointment at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.

 

Dr. Tsang earned his Psy.D. degree in clinical psychology from William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J. He completed a postdoctoral neuropsychology fellowship at Stony Brook Medicine in East Setauket, N.Y. and a health service psychology internship at Erie Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Erie, P.A. He successfully served three consecutive one-year Neuropsychology Externships at Hackensack University Medical Center Neuropsychology Service – Hackensack, N.J.; Columbia University Medical Center Neuropsychology Service – New York City, N.Y.; and Envisage Neuropsychology, PC – New York City, N.Y.

 

Throughout his career, Dr. Tsang has contributed numerous peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and educational presentations focused on the field of clinical neuropsychology. He also has served as an ad-hoc reviewer for numerous peer-reviewed journals and is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, the American Academy of Neurology, and the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Tsang was the Division of Rehabilitation Psychology (Division 22) Science co-chair for the American Psychological Association 2024 convention. He is the incoming co-chair of the Communications and Social Media Committee of the New York State Association of Neuropsychologists.

 

He maintains a busy private practice and consulting roles offering neuropsychological assessment, psychotherapy, executive coaching, and cognitive remediation. Dr. Tsang is actively involved in teaching clinical/counseling psychology students, neurology residents, and neuropsychology post-doctoral fellows.

 

Dr. Tsang applies his knowledge of brain-behavior relationships in cognitive assessments as well as evidence-based therapies to help manage conditions affecting the brain. He uses cognitive rehabilitation to help people improve their memory, ability to manage stress and organizational skills with the goal of enhancing patients’ brain function and overall quality of life.
