WHAT PSYCHOLOGISTS NEED TO KNOW IN A POST-ROE WORLD: WHAT IS THE IMPACT ON PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES, WHAT ARE THE RISKS, AND HOW CAN PRACTICES BE PROTECTED

Program Description:

Abortion has been in the news with a vengeance since the surprise overturning of Roe vs Wade, enabling each state to create its own standard for abortion and its care. With states looking at laws that target “aiding and abetting” or “traveling across state lines,” mental health clinicians can no longer just talk about it with clients within the privacy of our offices: particularly for those of us who participate in PsyPact and work with clients in some of these states. This workshop will do a deep dive into abortion, the emotions behind it, our own biases, and how we might protect ourselves and our practice.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Discern nuances and differences between various types of abortion and the emotional aftermath of each.
2. Identify the sociological narratives that shape the abortion dialogue and how they impact those seeking and obtaining abortion care.
3. Identify potential risks for clinicians discussing abortion with their clients both presently and potentially in the future.

About the Presenter: Dr. Bindeman graduated from George Washington University and is the co-owner of Integrative Therapy of Greater Washington in Rockville, Maryland. Her specialty is in the field of Reproductive Psychology, where she actively writes, lectures, and presents. She is a consultant in training in EMDR through EMDRIA. She has served on several committees within the Mental Health Professional Group of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and was recently elected to its Executive Committee. She served as a former Board Member of the Maryland Psychological Association for over 10 years. Dr. Bindeman is a member of multiple organizations focused on Maternal and Reproductive Mental Health and was appointed by the Governor of Maryland to serve on its Maternal Mental Health Task Force. She was recently awarded the Karl Heiser Award for her legislative efforts on behalf of psychology. Dr. Bindeman has published several chapters and articles
