For more information contact apponline.org.\nThis workshop fulfills CE licensing requirement for training designed to enhance competence in the provision of\npsychological services to culturally diverse populations.\nWorkshop Level: all levels\nProgram Description:\nTransgender (TG) and gender nonconforming (GNC) individuals are at higher risk for co-occurring\nsubstance use and mental health diagnoses than their cisgender peers. Many TG/GNC people may avoid\nmental health and medical treatment, as providers lack knowledge of working with this population. It is\nrecommended that treatment centers and clinicians become aware of the unique needs of TG and GNC\npeople to enhance treatment programming and create an environment which is inclusive and affirming.\nThis presentation will review the foundational factors to provide effective clinical treatment to these\npopulations. This presentation will identify how to create an environment which is affirming and\nconducive to change. This presentation will also identify ways to support staff and other clinicians who\nmay struggle when working with TG/GNC clients. Finally, this presentation will identify options to use\nCBT to assist TG/GNC clients.\nLearning Objectives: After attending this workshop, it is expected that participants be able to:\n-Participants will identify the process of treatment for individuals who identify as transgender or\ngender non-conforming.\n– Participants will list ways they can create inclusive and safe environments for transgender\nclients.\n-Participants will identify ways to support staff and other clinicians who may struggle to work\nwith TG/ GNC clients.\n-Participants will identify how to apply CBT to TG/GNC-related concerns.\nAbout the Presenter\nFredrick Dombrowski is the AMHCA Past President and has extensive experience treating those living\nwith co-occurring disorders. He has been a supervisor and director for multiple programs including\ninpatient, outpatient, and forensic treatment. Currently, a Department Chair at the University of\nBridgeport, he is focused on experiential learning through a perspective of cultural humility and\nequitable clinical care. He has recently published the book Co-occurring Mental Illness and Substance\nUse Disorders and has appeared on television, radio, and internet advocating for the helping professions.\nHe has won several awards for his work with marginalized populations.\n
